A. — Subst. invar., vieilli, fam. Personne dépensière, personne qui coûte beaucoup d'argent. J'aime mieux un mange-tout, passionné comme toi pour les femmes, que ces froids banquiers sans âme (BALZAC, Cous. Bette, 1846, p. 320). Ses fils, Eugène et Aristide, ces mange-tout, dont il regrettait si amèrement les mois de collège, payaient enfin les intérêts du capital dépensé pour leur instruction (ZOLA, Fortune Rougon, 1871, p. 296).
B. — (Haricot, petit pois) mange-tout/mangetout. (Haricot, petit pois) dont on mange la cosse verte avec le grain. Nous consommons les jeunes gousses des variétés dites Mange-tout des Pois et des Haricots (Bot., 1960, p. 1050 [Encyclop. de la Pléiade]). Haricots mangetout à gousse verte (Catal. Graines d'élite Clause, printemps-été 1980, p. 17). La plupart des haricots (...) ne posent pas de problème de congélation. Il en va autrement pour les mangetouts à cosse plus charnue et plus riche en eau (Rustica hebdo, 6-12 mai 1981, n° 593, p. 13).

Étymol. et Hist. 1. a) 1553 adj. (RONSARD, Harangue ds Œuvres, éd. P. Laumonier, t. 5, p. 214: la Mort mangetout); b) 1872 subst. «celui qui dépense, dilapide» (ZOLA, Curée, p. 364); 2. ca 1700 pois mange-tout (Roticochon d'apr. ROLL.
